Summer White On Navy

It’s been a busy week in the Coombs’ house! Not only did Tor’s show begin airing this week on ABC, but we have also been starting some minor renovations in our Los Angeles home! It only took us two years after we moved in, but nevertheless we have been giving everything an uplift and update. We transformed our kitchen from a yucky all over beige yellow to crisp white and navy, thus making my post today about summer white on navy very appropriate!

My dream kitchen was always a white kitchen with white backsplash, white cabinets top and bottom, brass fixtures and handles, and a white and grey quartz countertop. My husband argued that that would be too much white for him, so we compromised and both agreed that navy works amazing alongside white.

We plan on completely gutting our kitchen and upgrading everything, however, that’s going to be a MASSIVE project. We’re talking about rearranging plumbing and electrical as well as take absolutely everything out and changing the entire layout. That project will take weeks, and right now our schedule is up in the air (as I mentioned frequently in my last post) as we await the future of Tor’s show. If he’s headed back to Spain for a few months, there’s absolutely no way I am overseeing the project myself. I also don’t think Tor trusts me as I would totally make everything the way I want it and he wouldn’t be able to put in input! So, it’s best to put it on hold. Until then, we decided to paint the cabinets we already have and paint all the walls downstairs. We painted our bottom cabinets a deep navy and the top cabinets a crisp swan white to give us a preview as to what our dream kitchen will someday look like.

Tor and I are doing it all ourselves (we love watching DIY Network and HGTV) so it’s taking longer than if we hired a team, which we could have done but we are stubborn and want to say we put our own blood and sweat into our home. Don’t worry though – we are hiring a team for the bigger kitchen project as that would probably take us a year if we didn’t!

Okay, so I got a bit carried away explaining our house renovations under a style post, but my outfit kind of goes along with our current plans since it’s all about summer white on navy. I love bright outfits (and bright spaces!), but sometimes it’s best to break it up with a deeper color (Tor’s argument for the navy in our kitchen). I last wore this Ulla Johnson dress in Spain and in Denmark, so I was excited to get to bring it back out for a day at home in California (see my post here about why I love recycling pieces in my closet). It’s the perfect summer white on navy dress.

White and navy mesh together so perfectly. It doesn’t have to be major contrasts either – it can be in the details. I love the navy trim on this perfect summer blazer as it went with the navy bow on my dress as well as my navy suede flats. Normally I consider navy more of a fall color, but there are certainly ways to incorporate it into the perfect summer look.

Oh we aren’t finished yet! It’s still a crazy mess in our house with paint buckets, rollers, and drop cloth everywhere but once it’s done we will share!

So cute that you two are painting together. I painted my kitchen cabinets myself last summer too (just white though, I wasn’t adventurous enough to try a color- though if I would have seen this post back then, I would have) I had friends over for a “paint night” which helped speed up the project. However, because neither my husband nor I are very handy- we still have a couple of cabinets without doors re-affixed! Needless to say it’ll probably be my last DIY project.

      Hi Shira,
I just wanted to respond because we did out caninets in our old house just last year and I feel you! We, however, did an off-white chalk paint that has a cream tint in certain lights and we sanded edges to give it that shabby chic kind of look. I would not recommend it, unless you can paint fast and have an extraordinary top coat that doesn’t chip easily! It was beautiful but the cupboards needed several dozen touch ups when we moved suddenly just a few months later. I hope you have much better success than we did. 😊

So interesting! At this point I’m just waiting until we strike it rich and can afford to have someone else gut the whole kitchen (and extend the house out to make it bigger). I love cooking and baking– and with four kids I have to do a lot of it– so I end up spending a lot of time in my kitchen. I know you’ve mentioned culinary things in previous posts and would love to read more about your cooking/baking.

I would definitely be up for more than a few house posts, Alyssa. 😋 I’m always putting HGTV on and I still my dad’s Architecteural Digest magazine every time he gets (don’t know how he of all people ended up with the subscription). I’m also going to be on the lookout for a few stable navy accessories/pieces that I can keep going in even when the temperature starts to drop! Thanks so much for the super fun post and keep us updated for the show! I have yet to watch (I’m slowly my way through ANTM cycle 17 on Hulu), but I definitely want to!!!
