Charming Luxury at Zero George

When planning our trip to Charleston, we knew there was one hotel we were anxious to stay at – Zero George. If you’re looking for a hotel that offers charm, luxury, romance, individuality, and an escape within a city, then Zero George is the perfect spot. The entire property is also completely Instagram-worthy if you ask me!

The address for the Zero George hotel is right there in the name – 0 George Street. Located on the corner of East Bay and George streets, the house on the property where you check in is the original house that was built in 1805! All the brick on the walls and surrounding the fireplace inside are the original bricks. Facts like that are always so fascinating to me (history nerd, right here!), since I am touching a piece of architecture someone physically built by hand over 200 years ago. A few of the buildings at Zero George were actually moved to that location from other streets in Charleston (a fact that really impressed Tor!), including the building that would be housing our room for the next 2 days. However, every building on site, whether moved there or original, all date back to the 1800s.

Our cozy bedroom was on the second floor of one of the buildings and we had a very large verandah that we got to share with our neighbors during our stay. One fun fact we were told is the reason why most of Charleston’s verandahs face southeast is because that is the direction towards the water. Back in the 1800s, air conditioning was obviously not a thing so the breeze from the ocean was what was used to cool off. Zero George boasts several verandahs, including one off the main house that is the perfect spot to enjoy some wine and cheese (or goofy time with your spouse).

One amenity we were excited about at Zero George was the complimentary bicycles you could take out for the day. You’re probably sitting there going, “Really, Alyssa? Bicycles? That’s what made you excited?” Trust me, Charleston is the kind of city you really want to see on either foot or bike, and I had always pictured Tor and I riding bikes around the town. We took two bikes out one afternoon for a nice ride to and from lunch in town, and it satisfied every desire I had. In fact, I wanted to ride the bikes everywhere! PS I know my back tire is flat in these pics. Don’t worry, I didn’t end up taking this bike out to ride. They happily gave me another for the day while they pumped the back tire on this one.

After a day of exploring, we decided to take advantage of another amenity that Zero George offers for their guests – complimentary wine and cheese from 5 pm to 7 pm. It was still pretty warm and humid out, so we decided to try out relaxing on the verandah that faced southeast towards the water as we sipped buttery Chardonnay while enjoying three different types of cheeses. It was so relaxing that we ended up sitting there sipping and chatting for over 2 hours! It was the best way to take a rest between our afternoon activities and dinner.

We did not get to try their restaurant at Zero George, but both nights they were very busy (and we visited during the week!). We got a sneak peek of the chef and sous chefs at work in the kitchen, which is right there in the lobby of the hotel and is also original to the property. As someone who went to culinary school in NYC, I was naturally very happy to watch them create each evening’s tasting menu with the freshest ingredients. They even offer cooking lessons in Zero George’s kitchen, which is something I will definitely have to do next time! We did get to indulge in their breakfasts though, which featured the delicious Callie’s Biscuits I had heard so much about (so yum!).

Sadly, after two cozy and romantic nights, we had to say goodbye to Zero George. It won’t be our last time there, as we will have to return to experience their restaurant and cooking classes! From the very sweet and helpful staff to the history, luxury, romance, and charm of each room throughout the hotel, Zero George will probably be one of our favorite hotels for a long time to come. In fact, we are already brainstorming ideas on how to bring our friends out with us next time!

Are you growing your hair back out to your natural colour? It looks really beautiful! Would you ever go back to red or no?

I am growing it out yes! No plans to ever go back to red. If I ever change up my hair color again it’ll be to go blonder, but I think I am going to stay my natural hair color for a while. It’s much healthier.
