As soon as my husband and I made arrangements to return to Copenhagen, he of course left the itinerary responsibilities to me. I knew I wanted to visit some of the royal palaces throughout the city, but I realized as time went on in the planning that the itinerary was becoming more of a food tour of Copenhagen (an idea that my husband did not and would not say no to!) with a touch of royalty. Food and palaces – what could be better? Since we were traveling to Copenhagen with friends, I thought trying different restaurants would be even more exciting for all of us together, especially restaurants that took us out of our comfort zone.
One reason why our Copenhagen trip became so food-heavy is because I grew up on Danish food and I wanted to get my hands on as many Scandinavian dishes as I could (I think I cried every time I bit into a smørrebrød!). We all ended up staying at Hotel Babette Guldsmeden (same hotel Tor and I stayed at in 2014) by Amalienborg Palace. Tor and I booked a suite with a balcony that overlooked the palace and Marmorkirken.
The next day, we spent time shopping along Strøget, Copenhagen’s major shopping street. I popped into Designer’s Remix and Ganni (both Danish brands) while Tor popped into Norse Projects. After shopping, we stopped at Serenity Cupcakes. We hadn’t had lunch yet but do you think that stopped me from devouring cupcakes?
The little cupcake cafè was so cute and quaint. They had my favorite cupcake flavor in the world – a rare one of white chocolate raspberry – and a chocolate cupcake with an Oreo baked in the middle. Talk about heaven! We happily enjoyed our cupcakes while sipping on decadent hot chocolate and mochas.
We wandered back towards Nyhavn and stopped at Vaffelbageren (“waffle baker”) for some flødeis (“ice cream”). Vaffelbageren is well known for its ice cream and fresh waffle cones (hence the name). Even though it was chillier this day, that wasn’t stopping us from enjoying yummy cones.
I didn’t get to try everything I would have liked to in Copenhagen, but all the more reason for us to return someday soon to enjoy more of what Copenhagen has to offer!
