Venezia

There were 2 cities in Italy that my husband had always wanted to take me to - Florence and Venice. We had already visited Florence in the middle of our Italian honeymoon, so now it was time to visit the city on the water.

We had saved Venice for last, but now I kind of wished we started with Venice. It's certainly one of the most remarkable cities I have ever visited. I have never seen anything like it. What's sad was it wasn't at the top of my bucket list, and I have no idea why! From Chianti, we drove back to Florence to drop off our rental car. We then hopped aboard a 2-hour bullet train to Venice, specifically the Italo train. We had reserved a private cabin for ourselves where we edited photos and had some quiet. Our train pulled into Venezia Santa Lucia station (Venezia Santa Lucia and Venezia Maestre are two different train stations - Maestre is on the mainland), and we took a vaporetto (a water bus) down the Grand Canal to our hotel in San Marco. Not only were the rooms luxurious and the staff exceptionally courteous, but their breakfast was the best hotel breakfast we had had on the entire trip (Madrid is a close second). While Corte di Gabriela is located in San Marco near all the top Venice attractions, it is also located on a quiet street with a quiet residential canal behind it. Our bedroom also had big windows that opened to a canal view. It really is unlike any other city I have ever visited. Tor and I enjoyed getting lost amongst all the secret, hidden alleyways as well as stopping for a delicious gelato (that's a scoop of Kit Kat flavored gelato on my cone!). This post makes me want to visit Venice! Great photos 🙂 Are there any other European cities on the bucket list that you’ve yet to visit?

I just got back to the OC after spending Thanksgiving week in Rome & Venice. I wish I would have seen your post before we went, but I have to totally agree with you that Venice is such a unique, beautiful place with so much character and charm, and it really is impossible to take a bad picture there!!! I really enjoy your site and have taken notes on your posts about Iceland, as it is next up on my vacation destination list 😉
