Winter Road Trip with Sixt

To be able to explore more of what Lapland in Finland had to offer us, there was one thing Tor and I were very keen on doing – a winter road trip! After spending 16 days in Iceland driving around the entire country, a little road trip in Finland was something we were ready to tackle. When I saw “we”, I mean Tor because he’s a much better driver than I am!

When it came to researching the right rental car in Finland, Sixt was our first choice. We had first heard about Sixt back in Iceland, so we were excited to rent a car from them in Lapland. As there are no trains or flights between Rovaniemi and Levi, driving was going to be our best option. Sixt’s fleet of cars consists of many beautiful luxury cars, and we were very lucky to be able to drive a Mercedes Benz E-Class from Rovaniemi up to Levi. What an amazing drive this car was! It was much nicer than my own car back at home! For the two hour drive north (more like 3 hour drive because we kept stopping to take pictures!), we hooked up Tor’s phone to the car’s bluetooth and audio system and listened to Finnish music that made us fall in love with our surroundings all over again.

The drive was breathtaking. It was exactly what you’d picture a winter road trip to be. We drove up a 2-lane highway surrounded by miles of snow covered trees, only passing cars maybe two or three times. It was serene, quiet, and beautiful. For about an hour, we were the only ones on the road, making us feel like we were the only two people in the world (who were crazy enough to drive two hours in a snowstorm in Finland). Despite it snowing during our entire drive, our Sixt Mercedes Benz never let us down. In fact, it was probably one of the smoothest drives we have ever been on, even in the snow! What was also a neat trick was the car’s keyless system, which allowed us to not to worry about locking ourselves out of the car while we stopped in the middle of the road to take photographs.

What destination would you travel to on a winter road trip?

Style note: I’ll be honest, the coat I am wearing in this post was a bit of an impulse buy during a Black Friday sale a few months ago. I saw the coat online and fell IN LOVE with the red faux fur detailing. Living in always-sunny-and-warm Los Angeles, my husband rolled his eyes as I welcomed yet another coat into my closet. But it was worth it! The coat was not only warm, but super gorgeous! The colors are even more striking in person, making it pop even more against snowy backdrops.

Thank you to Sixt for sponsoring this post. Although Sixt worked with us to sponsor our rental car, all opinions in this post are my own.

Hi Andrea! We use a Nikon D750 with 24mm, 50mm, and 85mm lenses. We also use a Sony RX 100 Mark IV for some food pics, landscape pics, and all our videos.

Hi Alyssa! love all your blog posts, and now I’m planning my own trip to finland! just a general question about car rental…did you guys have problems renting the car or driving with your American Liscenses, and what hidden details someone who has never rented a car might encounter? thanks so much!

Hi Dana! We had no problem at all renting with our US drivers licenses. They’ll require at least one driver to have one to present to the staff member when you pick up the car. Hidden details would be extra fees or insurance costs. We opted for an additional $50 insurance fee that would protect the entire car should something happen to it. We were driving in the snow and we didn’t know how unpredictable the roads and weather was going to be like in Iceland. Better safe than sorry!
