My Winter Skin Care Routine

shop the post

While in Finland, the harsh, below zero temperatures were certainly no friend to my skin. My winter skin care routine has had to be a bit amplified due to the fluctuating temperatures throughout our travels, and my skin has been thanking me for it. Cold weather is usually extremely dry which can definitely make skin feel a bit dehydrated. I've been using a few products each morning and night to keep my skin clear, dewy, and less red. [gallery link="none" columns="2" size="full" ids="15450,15445"] [caption_box id="1"] [gallery link="none" columns="2" size="full" ids="15449,15448"] I've been trying out new products lately, so my winter care skin routine has changed a bit over the last few weeks. I also recently had the pleasure of visiting Rescue Spa in New York City before we flew to Finland where my skin received a little TLC. I don't normally book facials for myself (my last one was before my wedding almost 2 years ago), but I had heard such positive reviews about Rescue Spa and decided it was the perfect place to pamper my skin before heading into the bitter cold. Since going off birth control, my skin tends to get "congested" on my forehead as well as along my cheekbones. My bio-lift facial helped to clear those zones, and my new skin care routine will help keep my skin clean, hydrated, and smooth. My esthetician also revealed to me that I have dry skin, which was very surprisingly to me since for so long I dealt with more oily skin. Age and going off birth control definitely affects your skin!

Cleanse

I have been using micellar water to clean my face each morning and night since last June. I have been using this Erborian micellar water for the last 7 months, and I've also heard great things about this Elemis one as well. Some nights, I use these wipes instead to help take off any light makeup I may have on. For heavier makeup, I remove it with this Farmacy cleanser. However, while I was swearing by micellar water alone to cleanse my face twice a day, I found out in NYC that that's not enough. With my dry skin type, I need a cleansing milk to wash my face and so I have been using this Biologique Rechere cleansing milk twice a day.

Acne Treatment

With my skin all clean, I then use one of these blemish pads by Peter Thomas Roth. I rub them into my skin in a soft, circular motion over troublesome spots, such as a my forehead, cheekbones, edge of my chin, and my nose. It's quite strong, but it helps zap blemishes that are growing or threatening to grow. At night, I will use this Glamglow mask for 20 minutes before using the pads. The mask is a bonus in helping to eliminate blemishes, plus it makes my skin feel really smooth afterwards. I've also been using this toner since my facial in NYC, and I've noticed a complete difference in my skin since I started using it. It helps keep pimples away, plus it's really clearing out the bumpy congestion I have on my forehead.

Facial Oil

A few months ago, I started incorporating facial oils more into my routine. My favorite lately is this blue facial oil from Herbivore. Don't worry, it doesn't turn your face blue! It helps combat redness and hyper-pigmentation with blue tansy and vegetable-derived squalane. It's an all natural product, which is definitely helpful for my sensitive skin. It also comes in a travel bottle, which I have with me in Finland.

Moisturizer

I use different moisturizers in the morning and at night. In the morning, I've been using this new creamy moisturizer from Herbivore. It's by the same brand as my facial oil, so it's all natural and gentle on my skin. It keeps my skin baby soft and smooth all day. Cream moisturizers are best in the winter time since they are heavier, so my winter skin care routine features a new product. For my nighttime moisturizer, I recently switched from this gel-oil moisturizer that I had been using for several months to this heavier, creamier moisturizer. While I love my usual nighttime moisturizer, my winter skin care routine calls for a more heavy duty one to get the job done. I recently saw another blogger talk about the Epionce moisturizer on her blog, so you know it's good!

Eye Treatment

Last but not least is my favorite eye cream from La Mer. I actually did a campaign with this product back in September, and I've been using it religiously ever since (proof that I really only do campaigns with brands or products I love). It really is amazing and my dark circles have been diminishing the more and more I use it. The price tag is pretty steep, however, a little bit goes a long way. I've been using this eye cream every morning since September, and the tiny bottle is still half full. I only use an eye cream in the morning, since for some reason my eyes are extra sensitive in the evening.

Sunscreen

Even as part of my winter skin care routine, I always apply SPF to my face. My favorite sunscreen is this one by Farmacy. It looks like it'll go on thick, but it really melts into your skin and blends in. Makeup can layer on top of it really well.   What products are your go-tos for your winter skin care routine?

Can you make a basic makeup video???

    • The A List

      Sure!

I would highly highly recommend checking out the site carolinehirons.com She is a certified skin care aesthetician and all around skin care expert. She knows 100% what she is talking about (and why wipes should only be used for flights, festivals and fannies). I’ve learned a lot from her over the last 3 years.
My favorite brands for my skin are (I have sensitive skin/rosacea): REN – Omega 3 serum and Vita Mineral rescue cream for night time. I use Tata Harper (all natural, organic, from Vermont) nourishing cleansing oil and a cloth to remove makeup. If you are in Europe and can get a hold of Emma Hardie Moringa Cleansing Balm – it’s the best stuff in the world but sadly not available in the US. Votary (UK brand) make a wonderful oil and do ship to the US. I’m also a fan of Kate Somerville Age Arrest Serum (I’m 40 but I’ve used it for years). I tried a bunch of the range from Farmacy but just didn’t get on with the makeup remover (I had trouble getting it off my skin), or the serum. FAB First Aid Beauty products are good and a lower price point but can be heavy on Shea butter which can cause problems. I’ve tried several Sunday Riley products/oils and liked them but my face is too sensitive over the last year to use them now. We are bound for Iceland on Friday so I’m packing up my favorites for the extreme temperatures.

    • The A List

I love REN! I have used a few of their products before, especially when we were living in Toronto. For Iceland since it’ll be cold, I recommend Dr Dennis Gross Deep Collagen cream (https://theal.ist/2o3ZKlH). It SAVED my skin in Lapland. Then again, it was below 0 in Finland haha

  3. Bailey Holloman

You forgot to mention heavy duty lip balm I’m curious as to how you combat dry lips during your winter travels ? But that’s an awesome list of products.Ive been using Josie Maran Aragon oil face cream because like you I have really dry skin especially in winter. It really sinks in and gives skin a a “glow” even at night.

Also what are some of your fav drugstore products you like to use if any?

    • The A List

For lips, I use a lip mask at night: https://theal.ist/2EnT8Wl. I’ve been using it for about 8 months now and love it! During the day, I use FAB’s lip repair: https://theal.ist/2o46MXL.

My favorite drugstore products are Say Yes (can be found in any Walgreens or Duane Reade), Cetaphil, and Aquaphor (for super chapped skin or lips).

Hi Alyssa! I have been waiting for this post for ages and was so excited to see the email in my inbox saying that it had been written! I will definitely try some of your recommendations! I am currently obsessed with Vitamin E Sink In Moisture Sleeping Mask from Body Shop. I commute a lot so my skin gets very dry. After I shower when I get home I use this cream and it makes my skin feel so dewy and alive after feeling like paper during my daily travels. I highly recommend it and as a bonus it’s from a company against animal testing. I also love Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion+ from Clinique it’s just amazing and it’s my all year round face cream! I also love Moisture Surge™ Intense Skin Fortifying Hydrator by Clinique which I use when I travel in Greece and swim in the sea. The salt from the sea makes my skin so dry but this cream is miraculous for my skin. Have you ever used any of these products ? And yes please can you do a basic make up video. Also have you ever used monthly beauty box subscription services? Great post !

    • The A List

I used to swear by Clinique’s Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion! For now, I’ve had to switch to something a little heavier, but I did love that one!

Some of these are not organic. If they are not organic they have pesticides in them and that is absorbed. Google Ingredients to avoid in personal care

It has been simply incredibly generous with you to provide openly what exactly many individuals would’ve marketed for an eBook to end up making some cash for their end, primarily given that you could have tried it in the event you wanted
