Chunky Knits for Fall

shop the post

We are slowly approaching one of my favorite times of the year – when the temperatures drop, the leaves begin to change, and the sun sets a little earlier. Although autumn is a little bit farther away in Hong Kong than my hometown, that doesn’t mean I am not getting excited about switching out my summer wardrobe for my autumn wardrobe full of chunky knit sweaters. For those who are new here, cooler weather plus me equals best friends. I feel most like myself and feel most comfortable when I’m in chunky, oversized sweaters and cozy leggings.

A few years ago, I found a few shops on Etsy that make hand knit chunky sweaters and cardigans that are beyond perfect for fall. There’s something extra special about a sweater that’s handmade just for me. I grew up with my grandmothers and my mother knitting special pieces for my wardrobe, so I’ve always loved the idea of a cozy sweater being knit exactly how I’d like it. It feels one of a kind and it’s also promoting slow fashion which is better for our environment.

These photographs were taken in the summer of 2018 in British Columbia, Canada. Autumn was right around the corner, with the mornings and evenings being exceptionally cool already. I was very eager to wear my first hand knit chunky cardigan as we explored Lynn Canyon in the early morning hours, with no crowds or hot temperatures to interrupt our visit. All you could hear was the sound of rushing water below the suspension bridge and the early morning birdsong.

Unfortunately, the shop I purchased the cardigan I am wearing in this post is temporarily closed (the shop is located in Kyiv, Ukraine and is taking a short break due to the ongoing conflict) but I did purchase a cardigan two years ago from another Etsy shop. A lot of these cardigans are a bit of a splurge, and the wool used for them is usually a medium weight, but they will last years (my cardigans still looks brand new even years later!). I am actually looking forward to wearing it postpartum, as I can picture myself in the cooler Hong Kong weather sipping some breakfast tea and pushing my baby in her stroller.

I also love this chunky knit cardigan because of it’s fun colors, as well as this one. This hot pink and purple chunky knit cardigan would pair perfectly with brown over the knee boots, and this cardigan is a cropped version of the chunky knits I have. There’s also this gorgeous knit that is a bit more budget friendly under $100. You can’t go wrong with a classic ivory knit cardigan!
